Waitsfield:
Settled in 1789 by General Benjamin Wait. In 1830, a grist (flour) mill
and sawmill sat on our lodge's site. This old mill now houses our lodge.
-
Hiking:
The Long Trail, less than 10 miles from our lodge, is one of the most
scenic trails in the East. Some of the mountains we hike are Scrag and
General Stark Mountains, Mt. Abraham, Camel's Hump, Mt. Ellen and Mt.
Mansfield. Peaks range from 2911 feet to the chin of Mt. Mansfield
(4393 feet, the highest peak in Vermont). Your trip leader will have
most maps or if you wish you can call the Green Mountain Club at (802)
244-7037 for maps.
-
Swimming:
You can swim at the 1830 covered bridge (5 minute walk away) or at the
Punch Bowl (about 15 minutes away) where the river rushes into a deep
pool with diving rocks and waterfalls. Beautiful! Our river moves so
fast that it runs clean and the town constantly checks it for safety.
-
Canoeing:
Canoes can be rented at the Waterbury reservoir (15 minutes away).
Sometimes we do the Winooski, a Class I with an interesting rock
barrier as a skill test.
-
Biking:
Vermont is a bicycling mecca! Bikes, road and mountain, can also be
rented in the area.
-
Horseback
Riding: Several places. The Vermont Icelandic Horse Farm has adorable
fuzzy horses.
-
Tennis:
A short drive to indoor and outdoor courts. Sugarbush Sports Center
offers courts, indoor and outdoor pools and an excellent gym at okay
prices.
-
Misc.:
You find it: Shelburne Museum, soaring in a sailplane, shops, crafts,
old houses, round barns, summer theatre, yard sales, wandering back
roads...... discover it, then tell us!
What to Bring?
-
Be
sure to bring the proper equipment for the activity that you want to
do. For example, you will not be invited to hike without hiking
footwear, water bottle, daypack and rain gear. Sneakers are fine for
backroads strolling. Call the Trip Leader if in doubt about equipment.
-
All
linens and towels are supplied, but must remain in the lodge, so bring
a beach towel or blanket for outdoor use.
